Stress, food cravings and low level of hormone Serotonin. - A vicious cycle.
70A vicious cycle
It is written in the hub "14 Fat Burning Foods that Satisfy Unhealthy Food Cravings" by stevemark122000 that: "Serotonin is the hormone that controls mood, appetite and cravings. When levels are low, the body begins to crave high carbohydrate foods which lead to weight gain."
It seems to me that a low level of Serotonin not only is the reason coming from ones bad nutrition, but that it is caused in the first place through stress that is caused by unbearable situations, from the conflict a person has between ones desires and expectations and the actual reality in ones daily life situations. So even a person eats no junk food that contain high carbohydrates, the Serotonin goes down in ones system and craving for food starts that contain more sugar like it is offered in most junk food and so will bring weight gain and lower the Serotonin even more. I don't know if Serotonin is 'controlling' ones mood, but probably the mood goes down when there is a lack of satisfaction and happiness and with this also the Serotonin goes down, what even more will force the craving for substitutes. To prevent or heal this, it will be necessary to avoid junk food, but also to reduce ones stress. Changing ones life conditions will not always be possible, so it will be needed to change ones desires that one so desperately is trying to satisfy. These desires are mostly programed as part of the common concepts of our society and mostly totally unconscious, so hardly possible to change. Those strongly established attitudes and habits are integrated part of ones personality and forming ones self image and so this as pat of ones survival need, shouldn't be touched and so a change is not desirable. Also because if the stress level is high, people are extremely occupied and are not even asking to find ways to release ones conflict and stress. People find a way of release in food or other substitutes as tobacco, alcohol and drugs and of course also in entertainment and sex and all the other means that are available and common in this society. Not to forget all those power games when being 'successful' becoming famous and making a lot of money or the opposite when feeling as a hopeless victim, having a disease or feeling sooo bad - being occupied with oneself has no limit... When we see all the many people with over weight around us and it seems there are more and more of them and at the same time the consume of junk food is growing, then the reason is not the lack of Serotonin in the first place, but the growing conflict of people to manage their life in a creative way, that produces more and more stress.
What can be a solution to be able to get out of this vicious cycle?
The starting point might be asking questions about ones condition and situation. There can't be an answer without a question, so questioning oneself will be the first step. Then one will search for an answer. The Internet is a good place and makes it quite easy. One might not know exactly for what one is asking, so it is necessary to work on this. That's a process one has to deal with by oneself and within oneself. But don't worry, it will show up. With the intention to search and asking questions, one will open new spaces that until now has been invisible. You only need to invest some energy, in a way you might not yet be used to it, but it is worth while!
