Let's Find out the Root Cause of Addiction!

73

By BeiYin

Looking very near to it, we can find out, that the root cause lays in the substitutes we are offered and using without thinking about it...

The *experience of existence* causes addiction?

She-rah: "You praise and reward a boy with a cookie when he has learned something after his effort and this causes the release of dopamine in the child's brain making him feel happy." (Quote from She-rah's hub)

BeiYin: I think the most important is the praising that releases the 'dopamine' and that makes this person feel good, not the cookie because it contains sugar, although this might be another chemical reason to feel good. So it is the attention and acknowledgment that is received and so the person feels accepted in ones existence and so is *experiencing* ones existence. All people urge for this feeling and they force themselves and do most efforts to realize all those from this society set up goals to be happy, to feel their existence in a positive way. The problem is that there is a big discrepancy between the dreams people try to realize and the daily reality and so people are frustrated and disappointed when struggling and not being able to get the needed satisfaction that produces the dopamine. Then, out of the urge to feel and experience their existence in the desired way, they fulfill this with the help of substances that produce the necessary dopamine and then become addicted. That's the reason why alcohol and tobacco are consumed to such an extreme and are part of the accepted habits in this society, even though every body knows the damage is done. The same society that has given the goals that produce the need to take these substitutes. So one could come to the idea, that the same people who sell those addiction making products have set up those goals that establish the constant need then to use their products. Indeed, within this very complex system one wheel drives another one and people seem to be just the combustible.

There is nothing that not can become an addiction!

Of course shopping, gambling, sex or food can be addictive. Let us look in detail to all of these options: Shopping gives satisfaction because as a potential client one gets all attention, then one feels good in the new high fashion expensive outfit, but only for a short time, then one must go shopping again, if there is not enough money then maybe a drink will do the same. When gambling the excitement gives a strong feeling of existence and when winning this feeling goes up and lifts the winner into the utmost height. When loosing, the suffering might push the gambler into the dark mud of his feelings, but even though, it gives the feeling of existence... Sex gives even more excitement, the man feels superior and at the top of the world, but only for a moment and then he comes down, so he strives for more and find even more exciting ways. Eating is the most common way to find satisfaction stimulating ones senses and filling up the stomach.

Obviously the world is ruled by addicted people!

But there is a multitude more ways to satisfy ones need to feel ones existence: Having power to dominate others and manipulating the happening all around. That is connected with making money in abundance and there is no limit in it...

What is done for addicted people?

Many of those people who can't succeed to get satisfaction through all the established ways in our society, to be able to get the dopamine for their brain by being successful, are becoming addicted to stimulating substances. For those there are addiction rehabs, detox drug rehabs, drug addiction treatment programs, addiction intervention, drug free rehabs, etc. But for those, who are addicted to the in daily life available ways, that are part of our common life style, there are no programs, not even any information available to overcome their addiction that not only often ruins their life but has dramatically consequences for our whole humanity...

Without question - there can't be an answer!

We know now, what causes addictions, but is there a question how to get out of all those addictions? People suffer not being successful and getting satisfaction by reaching their goals, but mostly they don't ask for an alternative way. Being disappointed and suffering, even being in a constant state of depression, seems to be part of common life conditions...

Is there an alternative way to find satisfaction and joy by experiencing ones existence? Indeed there is. Not the way about Karl Marx said: "Religion is the food for the poor!" But something else that let us experience our existence not depending on any thing that we add by doing or having. Is there any question about it? Is the need strong enough and there has been enough suffering, then there might come doubts and out of this essential and existentially questions.

Let us all together find out the root cause of addiction!

Don't we all want to find *real sense* in life? Don't we all want to *heal* ourselves? Don't we all want to find *peace* without the need to fight constantly for it? Don't we want to feel good and *enjoy life* and ourselves without depending from the outside? So let us find out about it all together: Make your comments and questions! Isn't that exciting? - And by the way: I'm convinced that this is the only way that we can realize and live these findings, because then these are ours and we can *live* them in our daily life, not as a belief, a dream, a beautiful spiritual concept, but as a *realized* part of ourselves! We can *be* it! Even the best writings couldn't make this happen! So let's do it!

PS: I am disappointed about the lack of dynamic, engagement and motivation of people here at HubPages. I see it as reality that I need to accept. Why it should be different here than every where else... It seems to me, that nobody wants to be touched in ones precious established concepts and beliefs. Every body only wants to be confirmed in ones selfimage. That's not my game and I'm thinking about to leave this place. But maybe I will just stay with a few hubs, at least to be present in case some body has a question... But I will not make any more comments. I thought that we could find out the root cause together, but I see now that this was an illusion. I will dive and find the answer within myself...

PPS: The strongest addiction and the most common, is the addiction to find confirmation for ones personality and the fake reality that is created by them. All are addicted to this common game and do every thing to hold on it. There seems no way that people get out of it and even endless suffering or the best teaching how to get out of it, will have an effect. All prefer to stay in their personal drama! That would be a joke if it wouldn't be so sad... Seeing the solution, I still refuse to give up, but now I just will wait that some body might ask, coming from ones desperate need to get out of the straitjacket of personality, then of course I will answer...

As a life long sufferer of many and all addictions, I have pondered this question for all of my life. And I can say that one of the causes of my self imposed torturous existence has been the horribly misguided goal of the pursuit of happiness. The illusion that a rarified state of hyper-happiness and joy exists in this world creates a unsatisfiable horizon to aim for. While it is true that moments of intense joy and happiness exist in life, I have found that a more attainable goal of reasonable contentment allows me to be more comfortable in my own skin.

Another significant concept I have been discovering as I grow older is that my addictions were an attempt to fill a tremendous hole carved out of my soul. It is a double edged sword. The more you indulge your addictions the more empty and hollow you become and the cycle continues. Filling the soul, stuffing whatever I can find to make me feel ok was the engine that drove me. And in doing so I would be able to escape myself for a moment, and feel a sense of relief.

The answer? I have no idea. It is different for everyone I imagine. Learning to love oneself and others has been helpful. Love for loves sake without motive.

Great hub!

It's interesting that MordechaiZoltan speaks of a hole that needed to get filled.

Eckhart Tolle writes that one of the aspects of the egoic mind is a deep seated sense of lack and of not being whole.

If it is conscious, it manifests as a sense of not being worthy.

If it's UNconscious, it's felt as an intense craving.

In both cases people compulsively gratify their ego and identify with things to fill the hole they feel, striving after possessions, money, success, power, recognition or that special relationship so they can feel better about themselves, more complete.

Even if they get them, they find the hole is still there.

As long as the egoic mind runs one's life, one can’t be at peace except for brief periods right after the craving has been satisfied.

I suppose when a person finds something that seems to satisfy the craving, they latch onto it and thus it becomes an addiction.

Other notes I took on addictions that some might find useful:

Addictions live inside you as sub-personalities - an energy field that periodically takes you over completely including the voice in your head.

Example: you've had a rough day it tells you that you deserve a treat or it bypasses the mind and you automatically light up a smoke or go to the fridge and eat to excess.

Ways to overcome addictions:

When you notice the compulsive need, stop and take 3 conscious breaths - this generates awareness.

Then for a few minutes be aware of the compulsive urge itself as an energy field inside.

Feel that need to get what is desired.

Then take a few more conscious breaths. After this you may feel the urges are gone - or it may still overpower you.

Don't make it a problem

Make the addiction part of your awareness practice.

As awareness grows, addictive patterns weaken and dissolve.

Watch for thoughts that justify the addictive behaviour - it is the addiction talking.

On the subject of seeking that state of happiness:

I think it's interesting that one of the most powerful and pervasive cultures in the world (the USA) has the "pursuit of happiness" enshrined in it's constitution. It's thus seen as the done thing and can't be questioned - that would be unpatriotic ;-)

Another point:

I think the marketing and media industries have a lot to answer for in terms of brainwashing people into consuming things that they think will bring them happiness and thus fueling the unhealthy craving for more and making it seem acceptable.

Happy people are portrayed in adverts (and films/tv shows) who have certain possessions, lifestyles and the subtext is "If you work and get enough money, you can buy this product and thus find happiness"

And the marketing people do their job very well - if they didn't then people would buy stuff they don't need and the consumer economy would collapse and people would be out of work... so how to solve this? A different way of living - this can be the subject of another Hub ;-)

A recent example of this kind of advertising is the car manufacturer BMW's latest campaign "Joy" which depicts the typical retiree racing around in a red sports car.

It has the reassuring voice-over of Patrick Stewart informing us:

"Joy, that's who we answer to, joy is youthful...

.. at BMW we don't just make cars, we make Joy!"

Here is the link in case you haven't seen it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSlyK5w8AQg

For me this ad is blatantly targeting wealthy older men who have lots of money but are unhappy (and think buying a car will change that.)

I need to go and have satisfy my craving for food now - I'm just hungry though - it's not an addiction!

I am still waiting for Eckharts' royalty check for the hole concept!

Ah, Thanks for including a quote of mine, very sweet! Where's my cookie, lol? Yes, I believe the "praise" is the most important part for stimulating the dopamine release in children as well (positive nondestructive reinforcement). Could the habit of giving a cookie ultimately lead to unhealthy addictions, if it is unaccompanied by praise from the parent? The child learns they get a cookie, does good to get a cookie (without praise), could this lead to food addiction as an adult if it was learned in childhood (without verbal praise or other form of positive reinforcement)??? Does a scenario like this create insecurity in a child because of lack of positive reinforcement or positive attention from parents, thus leading to an insecure adult constantly needing something to make them feel existent or happy. I think this plays a role in addiction, but I believe there are a multitude of sources. Insecurity in oneself, society brainwashing to believe we need certain things (money, fancy cars, expensive clothes), constant remarks/ hatefulness from others that are insecure and need to make the people around them feel bad to feel good about themselves, being unable to have basic life necessities like food, dopamine deficiency, etc. Highly complex! I think it has to stem from childhood one way or another including genetics. ie. TV, lack of attention, buying love instead of showing love, depression/anxiety disorders.

I forgot to mention one other addiction of mine. It is food! Yes, I weigh 107 lbs. and am the worst binge eater you have ever seen in your life, it makes me VERY happy and existent. I need food to exist! I blame this on the fact that I have frequently been unable to have something that is needed for survival. On many occasions I have not been able to eat for days at a time or I'm able to eat, it created significant pain, and my body rejected it because of my autoimmunity. So now, I am able to eat like a normal person and since I have been denied food and struggled with my weight, it has become one of my worst addictions. I live in constant fear of not being able to eat, and I LOVE FOOD! That addiction stems from being denied something so basic for survival and it has created fear in me. How about this? I smoke and began smoking when my health really started deteriorating, 17yrs. old. I thought it was a coping addiction/mechanism but smoking suppresses the immune system and my nasty little habit could very well be something that has kept me from death. So, am I addicted to smoking or do I subconsciously know that I NEED my immune system suppressed that makes my addiction so strong. Maybe not necessarily an addiction but a form of subconscious self medicating because I NEED my immune system suppressed or I would not exist. Just like we need food or we would not exist. I am addicted to food and my cigarettes but does a person somehow instinctively acquire these addictions to maintain existence?! Are they addictions or means of survival in some cases? Oddly enough, I have severe reactions to normal basic things required to maintain human function, but I have never had a reaction to cigarettes. It is bad for my health and will probably lead to death but I do not severely react. My body rejects food, it's own hormones, daily things, but not cigarettes. Very Strange!!! What are your thoughts?

Do you mind if I link my hub to yours?

Well, the rooth cause must be within a human nature. Most of people are brain washed by society; get the wrong picture of reality; wrong walues, goals,... We have a tendency for commfort, pleasure; and once you know the shortcut, you`re trapped. Not dealing with reality in present moment, not seeing a chalenge in it, is being blind and lazy. So, my wild guess... LAZINESS.

I do agree its the cowards way to deal with everyday life, block out the horrible things they see or have been through and loss total respect for themselves and others. It is a security blanket, you feel like nothing can touch you or affect you. Wrong! your whole world is crumbling round about you!

unfazed4eva: You are right to say that blocking the problem is counter-productive.

Facing truth, working through pain, being with it makes it easier to release when it's processed.

This is excellent information here. It is proven that the release of dopamine is connected with the feel-good-satisfaction part of the brain. The same way serotonin is connected and endorphines, too. I often urge my clients to engage in physical activity to ward off depressive symptoms to stimulate the endorphins. I know for a fact it works. Thanks for some good material.

People like to feel good. What is your philosophy for being addicted to life? By this belief, I suppose you think one can live TOO much? Nope, I think not... By the way, how can you have a "fake reality" in a finite zone of mortality...while we all live in an illusion that extends to infinity within our own thoughts and imagination?

If you listen to most people, they will tell you opposite of how they live, preach what they don't practice, and recommend some lame way of living because it is easier...which I find, to be quite sickening.

Leave the "Dopamine" and other "feel good" chemicals out of it; science won't answer this query. The Homo sapiens are not addictive beings by nature, they simply seek perpetual happiness - which, can lead to addictive properties.
